Sandbox is proud to help Gilda’s Club with a new campaign focusing on the social support they provide to people facing cancer.
When you or a loved one is facing cancer, the emotional challenges extend far beyond immediate health concerns. Cancer crops up in conversations you have with friends, colleagues and strangers, often in the most unwelcome ways.
Gilda’s Club Greater Toronto provides social and emotional support to adults, teens, children, family members and caregivers facing a cancer diagnosis. In the club’s mutually supportive environment, members can share their experiences with others who are going through or have gone through similar life experiences.
Inspired by stories that cancer patients have shared online of awkward to awful conversations, we reached out to Gilda’s Club members, asking them to share their own stories. And they did, with some quotes including:
In addition to their own hard-to-handle conversations, some members shared their own moments when they said just the wrong thing. These brought to life the emotional challenges that Gilda’s Club helps members through every day.
It’s not that people are insensitive. It’s simply that people have a hard time talking about cancer. This insight became the anchor of compassion for this campaign.
